There is not a single criminal justice system at work in the United States, but rather a network of agencies acting at the city, county, state and federal level. Additionally, there are tribal and military criminal justice systems. This complex structure includes two main jurisdictions: state and federal. • State criminal justice systems deal with crimes committed within their own boundaries. • Federal criminal justice systems deal with crime that is either committed in more than one state or on federal property. Different jurisdictions may operate under different laws and processes. For instance, speed limits, marriage laws and business laws vary from state to state. Federal laws, however, apply to all states. The criminal justice system relies upon professionals from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds to function properly. This provides many opportunities for those interested in pursuing a criminal justice career. The criminal justice system is a set of agencies and organizations which work to control and prevent crime. They are also entrusted with enforcing penalties on those found guilty of violating the law. Professionals within the system work together to solve complex problems and create a safer society. The criminal justice system includes: • Law enforcement • The court system • The juvenile justice system • The correction system WHAT IS CRIMINAL JUSTICE?
