The first federal law enforcement organization, the U.S. Marshals, began in September of 1789. The first detective agency in America was started in Chicago, Illinois by Allan Pinkerton in 1850. The first juvenile court in the United States was established in Cook County, Illinois in 1899. The FBI was created to conduct investigations for the Department of Justice on July 26,1908. The first police woman was Lola Baldwin from Portland, Oregon. She was sworn into service in 1908. The FBI's Most Wanted list dates back to March 14, 1950. The first DNA-based conviction in the United States occurred in 1987 in Florida.
