Mindi Mull, PhD Associate Director of Faculty Support and Development, SSBS I found the ideas and suggestions offered by Drs. Harrison and Blackwell to be thought-provoking and important. We are very fortunate to teach in a one-to-one setting because it allows us to get to know our students individually and therefore better understand them and their needs. As Jill mentioned, approaching students with warmth, compassion, and a growth mindset is critical for helping students reach their goals. But beyond that, as Kristi explained, this is important not only for our individual students, but for society in general. Placing our work at NCU in the larger context of higher education in the United States, we can see that we are helping students achieve their academic goals – students who might not otherwise be able to do so. These students will then be able to take what they have learned and have a positive impact on their families and communities. Being mindful of this is important, especially as we face challenges and obstacles in our teaching. And educating ourselves to better understand our students and their experiences is crucial. Thank you, Kristi and Jill, for sharing your ideas and approaches! Do you have an approach, strategy, or suggestion you think others would find useful? Please share! You can send your ideas to me (mmull@ncu.edu) and I would be happy to include them in an upcoming faculty newsletter. Thanks!
