FACULTY UPDATES Carissa Smock, PhD Dr. Smock has been busy! • Dr. Smock attended the 2018 Ohio Public Health Combined Conference in Columbus, where she made the following presentations, along with industry colleagues: o "Build it but what happens if they come?: A focus group to determine park/nature users' perceptions of outdoors and their effects on physical and mental health indicators." o "Exploration of provider place-based exercise prescriptions and referrals." • Dr. Smock attended the 2018 Academy Health Annual Research Meeting in Seattle, where she and four associates presented "Assessing Health Care Clinicians Attitudes Toward Placed-Based Exercise Referrals: Exploratory Factor Analysis of a Newly Developed Survey Instrument." • Dr. Smock will attend the 2018 American Public Health Association Annual Meeting in San Diego where she and a colleague will present "Determining primary care providers' trends, barriers, and continuum of exercise-related provider practices that impact use of exercise prescriptions and referrals." • Dr. Smock and a co-author submitted an article to the Ohio Journal of Public Health entitled "Exploration of Provider Place-Based Exercise Prescriptions and Referrals: A Pilot Survey Research Study." • Additionally, Dr. Smock is currently conducting research with two colleagues to explore: o Potential clinical linkages of parks to primary care and impact on reported mood, self-rated quality of life, stress and resting heart rate o The impact of engagement with park environments on individuals' participation in outdoor and physically-active recreation to report and track in primary care o "Priority population includes those who are not traditional park users (urban residents, lower SES individuals, etc.) o Extension of the Japanese concept of "forest bathing" with "green prescriptions" used in New Zealand and elsewhere • The above research is being conducted in four phases (listed on the next page). The team completed phase two and is currently finishing up phase three, while circling back to complete phase one: FACULTY UPDATES
