The Benefits of Supervision Supervision is a multifaceted process that depends greatly on trust and connection between the supervisor and supervisee. In 2013, Dr. Bickler conducted a qualitative research project that highlighted the seven supervisory elements that remained significant to Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) graduates over time. Those elements are supervision that is grounded in theory, practice, support, patience, expertise, collegial relationship and promoting competence. (Bickler, 2013) Of those, supervision grounded in theory and supervision grounded in direct experience showed to be consistently most transformational to MFT graduates. One of the participants explained, "I was learning the models and I was trying to figure it out…You're seeing a client and it seems like you're just being thrown information and you don't know how to organize it… I had a supervisor tell me that all the information they (clients) give you are like these bubbles that float up in the air and I guess I'm very visual so I think this is why it worked…You take MFT Supervision: An Invitation to Reflexivity a piece of information and put it in a bubble and it just floats up in the air and what you're going to do eventually is that you're going to see how these bubbles connect and the line that connects one bubble to the next, that's the process. A supervisor told me this. I was done! Thank you (my supervisor) for speaking a language that made sense to me" (Bickler 2013). This statement highlights the pivotal and powerful roles of the supervisory process. When brought together, the theoretical lesson and the ability to put said lesson into action through direct experience, helps the supervisee become intentional in his or her therapeutic role. These are some of the key supervisory components that remain salient to a marriage and family therapist after graduation. References Bickler, A. E. M. (2013).
