Teaching Through Engagement
At this year's 2019 Symposium, we
announced the updated Teaching Through
Engagement (TTE)
©
guide with a more
robust definition of what engagement and
the TTE philosophy means. Engagement
is more than just grading and giving
feedback–it is an active relationship between faculty and
student, an exchange of ideas and information which
helps grow students from novices to experts. TTE is the
model of faculty-student interaction that NCU utilizes to
foster learning in our online environment. It is the guiding
philosophy for faculty and involves understanding who
a student is, both personally and professionally, and
tailoring our inter-actions to meet them where they are,
and get them to where they want to be.
The updated guide is now published in the CTL >
Faculty Resource Area. Many people contributed to
writing the updated content under the leadership of Dr.
Patty Postanowicz and Dr. Katie Buvoltz as CTL Faculty
Laureates. If you missed Patty and Katie's Symposium
presentation on the process of updating the guide, you
can watch the recording HERE. We are also working
on a training and communication plan for faculty
around TTE. The first
component of that is
a webinar series
to be followed with
training courses. The
first webinar was held
in early September.
If you missed it,
you can view the
recording HERE.
NVivo Software Package
We are excited to announce that we are now offering
NVivo for free to the NCU community. NVivo is a
software package that supports NCU students who
are conducting primarily qualitative or mixed-methods
research projects. With NVivo, students can store,
organize, transcribe, and analyze non-numerical or
text-based data, including video, surveys, MP3 files,
spreadsheets, social media, and interviews. With its
content analysis function, the program allows students
to categorize data, map commonalities, and generate
themes for deep analysis.
SPSS is a data management software program
that supports NCU students by clarifying the data
cycle and its analysis. Students who are conducting
primarily quantitative research projects can use SPSS
for completing their statistical analyses as well as for
editing and analyzing their data. Once the analyses are
complete, the program allows students to create visual
models, charts, and tables to better illustrate
their findings.
NVivo is available for download in NCUOne >
University Services Module > Student Technology
Resource Center. There are instructions and FAQs to
provide support there as well. SPSS is also available
for download in the Student Technology Resource Area
under Student Webstore for students, and through
sage.ncu.edu for faculty and staff.
What's Happening in The Commons
Chelsea Young, Director of the CTL
Welcome to Career Resource Collaborative
Katia Nyysti, Director of the Commons
We are launching a Career Resource
Collaborative community space in
The Commons. Here we will be net-
working, supporting members, and
collaboratively curating a collection of career resources
and opportunities for our NCU community. Our intention
is to empower students, alumni, and faculty to have
the positive impact they dreamed of on their local and
global communities. This is our first community in The
Commons where we are inviting all community members
to be active in our process of curating resources for our
community. We look forward to having you join us in the
Career Resource Collaborative as we build a robust center
where current students and alumni can find meaningful
resources to support them throughout their careers as they
work to achieve their dreams.
In this community space we are networking, supporting each other, and collaboratively
curating a collection of career resources and oportunities. Our intention is to empower
each other to have the positive impact we dreamed of on our communities.
Teaching Through Engagement
The addition of NVivo compliments our
current free offering of The Statistical
Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).
