5 POTLIGHT Social and Behavioral Sciences Erika Smith-Marek, PhD, LMFT Part-Time Faculty, Department of Marriage and Family Sciences Dr. Smith-Marek has been an Adjunct Faculty Member in the Department of Marriage and Family Sciences since 2016. She earned her PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy from Kansas State University, her MS in Marriage and Family Therapy from Auburn University, and her BS in Family and Child Development from Virginia Tech. She also holds a Master's degree in Exercise Science from the University of West Florida. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice and an American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) Approved Supervisor, specializing in the treatment of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder. Dr. Smith-Marek is a Certified Trauma Treatment Specialist through the Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists and an EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) Approved Consultant and Certified Therapist in EMDR Therapy, an evidence-based treatment for trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder. She founded and serves as the regional coordinator for the Northwest Florida EMDRIA Regional Network, which brings clinicians trained in EMDR Therapy together for continuing education opportunities related to the practice of this treatment approach. Her clinical and research interests converge around the treatment of trauma and exercise interventions for trauma and posttraumatic stress. She enjoys long-distance trail running, watching American Ninja Warrior, and reading. She is currently reading Mosquera's (2019) Working with Voices and Dissociative Parts: A Trauma-Informed Approach, Dumas's (1844) The Count of Monte Cristo, and her little boy's favorite books. She resides in Northwest Florida with her husband, Jon, and 3-year-old son, Alden (she first heard the name during her NCU interview with Dr. Darren Adamson, shortly after his grandson, Alden, was born and stored the name in mind).
