Networking You don't have to be limited to only formal professional networking events, office parties, or traditional networking sites. In her article, 13 Awesome Professional Alternatives to LinkedIn, Amy Bishop lists several sites that are less- advertised which can help you expand your networking pool. Many sites also offer ways for members to find connections based on common interests or services they offer, rather than affiliated organizations or shared specialization areas alone. Finally, networking should be approached with an attitude of appreciation. Showing gratitude for the opportunities you are given—as well as for those who took the time to put you in contact with them—goes a long way in promoting and maintaining formal and informal professional alliances and relationships. You may not always be in a position to return a favor, but expressing thanks to those in your network who help you contributes greatly to the health and success of a networking relationship and lets people know that their efforts and time are recognized and valued—and that goes a long way to build a lasting and supportive business community. Cultivating yourself as a well-rounded networker, who seeks to benefit themselves as well as benefit others, supports the building of community in a sincere way in which all parties can gain. Investing in building relationships is one of the best investments that will yield its return for years in continuation. Networking? Hmmm... pfff... maybe...
