How can we start networking or be better networkers? Here are 4 quick tips to get you started. 1. Make use of the (hidden) networks you already have It is a lot easier and rewarding to improve on what you have rather than build something from scratch. Foster the relationships you already have, reach out, communicate, and tighten ties. Create meaningful relationships that hold value within your existing network. 2. Surround yourself with great networkers Everyone has that one friend who knows everyone and talks to everyone. Try to associate with 'social butterflies'. You'll be surprised how much you can benefit from them. 3. Find your 'structural hole' and explore it The concept was developed by the sociologist Ronald Burt and, according to him, people are clustered together in groups of similar interests, hobbies, environment, education, etc. Find your niche and relish it! Increase your visibility by attending a meeting on a subject that interests you where you can meet people who share the same interests. This can lead to meaningful relationships. 4. Differentiate the range of interests you pursue Take it a step further. Tackle interests in and out of your niche. The more projects you engage in, the more diverse your exposure will be. You'll have the opportunity to meet various personalities and create value with every interaction. Become connected to key people and influencers. Networking is an exchange of value. The only way to grow is to get out of our comfort zones. Sometimes just taking our eyes off our phones when we're out in public will present us with countless networking opportunities. There are only advantages associated with networking. The only wrong way to network is to not network at all. Give it a try! 6
