STUDENT CENTRIC. REGIONALLY ACCREDITED. NONPROFIT. NCU SAILS FACULTY SENATE RETREAT Who would have thought that sailing the high seas on a cruise ship could be so productive? Well, that's exactly what it was for the nine Faculty Senate members who were onboard during the inaugural NCU Sails last month. Senators who embarked on the five-day cruise held their annual Faculty Senate Summit. The purpose of the Summit was to strategize the Senate's goals and align Senators' voices into one overarching message: How can we best serve and support students in our roles as mentors, guides, and facilitators of teaching and learning. Over the course of two days, Senate members discussed a variety of topics, including faculty mentoring, technology needs, establishment of a collaborative workspace for the sharing of ideas between schools, and agenda items for the Faculty Assembly during Symposium. "Besides gathering in a fabulous setting, the Faculty Summit was a perfect opportunity to meet my fellow senators personally," says Dr. Bakari. "So far, technology has not bridged this gap in virtual communication. There is simply no replacement for eye contact, 3-D perspectives, body language, and sunshine. According to Dr. Jacqueline Rogers, Senator and Adjunct Professor for the School of Health Sciences, "This year's Summit provided senators with the opportunity to use their creative talents to develop action items to enhance our Teaching Through Engagement." Further, Dr. Rogers noted that the high level of respect between and among senators and our university leaders during the two-day summit was palpable. In all, the Faculty Senate Summit resulted in successful goals on which we will work together throughout the coming year. Marie Bakari, Senator and Professor in the School of Business, expressed that her connection to the Senate was strengthened during the Summit and that she feels more capable of serving as a representative for faculty in the School of Business.
