The fourth is related to the third, but it is developing an understanding of professional identity as an MFT. In our profession, we have four or five different regulated professions in every state. I help them understand that considering cultural and social issues is part of the identity of a marriage and family therapist because we're looking at systems. While addiction counselors are looking at substance use and process addiction, while professional counselors are looking for psychopathology and individual issues, and while psychologists want to test everybody, our unique perspective as a discipline is that we are looking at how systems and relationships not only impact our clients, but also us and our profession.
