FA L L 2 0 2 0 – I S S U E 6 1 7 Practicum I This course provides students with an opportunity to start acquiring direct client contact and supervision hours towards graduation requirements. The emphasis of this course is on building foundational clinical skills and learning the skills needed to operate effectively and ethically when providing telehealth. Additionally, there will be a focus on furthering systemic thought and application to clinical cases. Students will be reintroduced to general systems theory as a foundation to exploring their personal theory of therapy. There is also a focus on cultural humility with diverse populations and ethical decision making, as well as an exploration of the self of the therapist and personal growth. Practicum II The emphasis of this course is on solidifying students' ability to both apply and explain systems theory in relation to their clinical cases. They will be asked to apply general systems theoretical concepts and assumptions to their cases and use the metaframeworks understanding in their own case presentation. There is also a focus on the integration of equity and inclusion, cultural humility with diverse populations, and ethical decision making, as well as self of the therapist exploration and growth. Internship I The emphasis of this course is on extending the systemic foundations gained in the Practicum courses to explore the MFT model that fits the students' own personal theory of therapy. Students will complete case presentations that focus on cultural humility with diverse populations, ethical decision making, and self of the therapist exploration and growth. Internship II The emphasis of this course is on building off of the systemic understanding and application gained in the prior courses to demonstrate a deeper understanding and ability to systemically conceptualize cases, develop appropriate treatment plans, identify research associated with the students' model including contraindications and efficacy, and assess personal strengths and challenges accordingly. Internship and Capstone Students will need to successfully meet the graduation hour requirements and pass their Capstone presentation. The emphasis of this course is on integrating information from the prior courses so that they are able to identify and explain the MFT model of therapy that best fits their personal theory of therapy. The final Capstone presentation will require students to identify how their chosen model is systemic, discuss research associated with their chosen model, and demonstrate their competency in the model via a case presentation. Additionally, students will discuss their cultural humility with diverse populations, ethical considerations they've encountered, and reflections on their self of the therapist exploration and growth. Updated Master's Program Clinical Courses There are five standard courses that all students take as part of their clinical experience, including Practicum I, Practicum II, Internship I, Internship II, and Internship & Capstone. The expectation is that, regardless of the course they are in, interns are continuously engaging in client contact (therapy), weekly individual supervision, and NCU group supervision. This summer, clinical faculty collaborated on revising our master's clinical courses. In these revised syllabuses, efforts were made to facilitate a clear connection between these courses and the program's didactic courses. The course descriptions are included below.
