Sherry Rieder, PhD Part-Time Faculty, Department of Psychology Dr. Sherry Rieder has been teaching at NCU since May of 2019. She is a core part-time professor teaching primarily Foundations of Health Psychology, Research Methods, Interviewing Skills, Theories of Personality, Social Psychology, and Cognition, Motivation, & Emotion. Dr. Rieder earned a BS with honors and distinction from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and went on to earn an MA and a PhD in clinical psychology with a specialization in health psychology from University of Illinois at Chicago. She also completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina and has been licensed as a clinical psychologist in South Carolina since 2005. Dr. Rieder began her career in teaching over 20 years ago as a teaching assistant at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). UIC has a large and very diverse student body, and the challenges and rewards of teaching a group of students with such a wide range of diversity kindled an ongoing love of teaching for Dr. Rieder from the start. Sherry has been teaching in online formats for over 15 years. As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Rieder has provided psychological services in a variety of settings including hospitals and outpatient clinics. In 2005, she opened a private psychology practice while also continuing to teach. In 2013, the variety of personal and professional demands that she had on her time led her to close the practice. Her clinical work specializes in assessment and psychotherapy, particularly for health psychology issues such as obesity/weight management and coping with chronic illness. Sherry's research interests are primarily in health psychology topics including weight management, obesity, and social support. Dr. Rieder currently lives in Charleston, South Carolina with her husband, daughter, son, dog, and two ducks. Before moving to the "Lowcountry" of Charleston, Dr. Rieder grew up in rural Wisconsin, and she also lived in Chicago for six years. For fun, Sherry enjoys spending time with her family, especially doing outdoor activities like camping, hiking, and going to the beach. Sherry also enjoys cooking and baking, which is a useful hobby in a family with growing children who always seem to be hungry. 3 Faculty SPOTLIGHT
