Student Editor Spotlight As my dear father recently wrote in one of his more notable writings, "[l]ife is a one-way road, although sometimes our innate curiosity prompts us to take shortcuts to satisfy it. When these deviations appear, they offer us an uncertain dilemma that, by impulse or by discernment, often induces us to take [said shortcuts]. When we take them, we may encounter additional pitfalls that will test our temperance to overcome [these difficulties]. If we succeed, we will feel the luggage we carry will have been enriched with new experiences that will help us overcome new obstacles." Speaking of obstacles, one of the difficulties people (especially women) often face is that of balancing their work with their personal lives. Specifically, the term "work-life balance" (WLB) is a simple concept in itself, yet it encompasses the widest range of fields or areas. The word "work," by traditional standards, is generally used to refer to a person's activity which generates income and allows them to sustain a living. Yet, in broader terms, this word is defined as an "activity involving WORK-LIFE BALANCE Tatiana A. Schiavone, MS, MA 2 The Psychology Bulletin As co-chairs of the NCU Psychology Association, we are pleased to bring you the NCUPA Spring Bulletin. In this issue you will find news of Psychology Department activities from Dr. Bettina Shapira, Chair of the Psychology Department, as well as three new student essays from graduate students. While singing the praises of the department and pursuing a doctorate in psychology, these students also note the challenges involved and the ways in which they have overcome those challenges. NCUPA is also working on several new initiatives, such as producing new webinar content that addresses the issue of how to succeed in the field of psychology. On February 24, Dr. Joel Goodin presented an excellent webinar: "Increasing Efficiency and Effectiveness as a Student: The Goodin Method of Optimal Learning." In this presentation, students can learn how to reach optimal learning and performance using the Goodin Method of Optimal Learning (G*MOL), which is a comprehensive learning and performance plan based on research in cognition, educational psychology, and sport psychology. Students can use G*MOL to become more efficient and effective in course work, dissertation progress, and in a wide variety of other life learning, training, and performance opportunities. If you would like to review the video of this webinar, please view it on the NCUPA Libguide. The NCUPA is YOUR association, so we invite, request, and hope you will send in your ideas of how to make the association more responsive to YOUR interests and needs. Please also reach out if you are interested in submitting an essay for our summer bulletin. Our email is ncupa@ncu.edu. Our Facebook page is https://www. facebook.com/NCUPsychologyClub.
