Melissa Arias Shah, PhD LMFT Part-Time Facult y, Department of Marriage and Family Sciences Dr. Arias Shah began teaching at NCU in 2014 as an adjunct, and provided clinical supervision to interns in 2016. She earned her PhD. in Family Therapy and MS in Marriage and Family Therapy from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She also earned her BS in Psychology with a minor in Family Studies from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. As a Professor, Dr. Arias Shah has provided guidance and affordance that enables students to synthesize learning into a coherent view of systems and become self- directed learners meeting course objectives through feedback and feed-forward. She has taught/mentored both master's-and doctoral-level students. Dr. Arias Shah has developed rigorous academia and clinical course curriculums dedicated to enhancing a positive learning experience, as evident in their competency development. As a clinical faculty member, Dr. Arias Shah thoroughly enjoys being a part of the interns' clinical journey. Her purpose has been to help MFT supervisees become ethical, competent clinicians who develop a sense of self of the therapist, cognizant of their relationship to systems and their therapeutic identity (model development) accordingly. Outside of Dr. Arias Shah's roles at NCU, she has been a clinician for over 16 years, providing extensive therapeutic services to South Florida's diverse communities (individuals, couples, and families of diverse cultures and diversities, including LGBTQ) using a collaborative, strengths-based approach (utilizes Solution-Focused and narrative therapy). On a personal note, Dr. Arias Shah has co-authored several children's books with her husband, who she has been married to since 2009. They are the proud parents of two young, intelligent, and beautiful children. Living in South Florida, they have the luxury to enjoy year-round outdoor living. They love nature, the arts, and sports.
