Q: What is done with rubric scores?
A: Aggregated results of assessment rubrics are reported in program reviews and to
our regional (WSCUC) and programmatic accreditors (if applicable). These results
also help us understand where we may need to explore revisions to programs
to help students on specific outcomes. Grading rubric scores may be used for
curriculum improvements.
Q: Why do I have to complete rubrics?
A: Faculty complete all assessment rubrics as part of their participation in the
institutional assessment process. The scores help us determine whether our
instruction is supporting students in achieving the learning outcomes at the desired
level. Grading rubrics support student success by making expectations explicit and
offering students a chance to self-assess before submitting. Grading rubrics also
help to calibrate faculty grading.
Q: Can students see the rubrics and/or my scores?
A: Students CANNOT see assessment rubrics at this time. This is something I would
like to explore and am in favor of changing. Of course such a change needs to be
carefully planned. Students CAN see grading rubrics.
Q: Can I use the assignment grade as a proxy for the assessment
rubric score?
A: No. The assessment of PLOs and ILOs is not related to the assignment grade.
The assessment of PLOs and ILOs is more specific and narrow in scope. Assignment
grades reflect a broad evaluation of student work – including critique of their
adherence to instructions and writing, etc.
