The Research and Grants Committee within the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences started in 2019 and is currently co-chaired by Dr. Mary Streit, Psychology department, and Dr. Jenna Wilson, department of Marriage and Family Therapy. This committee began as an effort to work towards creating a research community within NCU, primarily responsible for putting together an annual research conference for both students and faculty. At this conference, historically there has been a keynote speaker, along with research presentations by students with completed dissertations, and spark sessions for students just starting out. Spark sessions are for students who are in the early planning stages of their dissertation research, looking to get input and suggestions from the academic community at large who attend these sessions. For example, how to find the right sample, measure a concept, or deal with possible IRB concerns. If you have interest in either presenting your research, or participating in a Spark session, keep your eyes open for an email with a link to the proposal submission page, and submit your ideas. Save the date for Friday– June 10th, between 9-12am PT; 12-3pm ET. In addition to the Annual Research Conference, the Research and Grants committee has been actively working towards creating a research culture by exploring new and innovative ways to both promote and encourage the dissemination of research, including faculty and student presentations, and collaborative efforts focused on the publication of student dissertations in peer-reviewed journals. Finally, in more recent years, the committee has been actively working with the new Grants office coordinator – Laurie Mosier, to obtain funding for faculty research. As an example, with Laurie's assistance, Dr. Patrick McNamara recently landed a multimillion-dollar grant for research funding from the prestigious Templeton Foundation. The Research and Grants Committee hopes to see many more of these types of successes in the future – the start of exciting new things to come for the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
