Wow . . . it is already April 2017! Time flies so quickly! We anticipate another amazing year as the Department of Marriage and Family Sciences' staff and faculty work to ensure a good learning experience for our students. We are seeing continued growth in the student population – nearing 1,600 total students (approx. 1,300 MAMFT and 300 doctoral students). Those students reside in 17 countries around the world, and all 50 states in the US. Recently, I was asked by Marketing to provide some information about the impact for good that our program provides in communities throughout the world. The numbers were very interesting and inspiring. 1. Our students provide nearly 2,000 hours of therapy each week in locations across the globe. 2. That equates to roughly 104,000 hours of therapy each year. 3. Assuming that the average years of work as MFTs that our graduates will engage in is 25, and they work with about 125 clients per year, each group of 1,000 graduates will serve just more than 3,000,000 clients during their careers. 4. We should graduate roughly 1,000 students every five years. It is so great to be part of an organization through which we can are doing good in the world! Darren Adamson, PhD | Chair, Department of Marriage and Family Sciences We have fully implemented the Zoom videoconferencing software, and it has been wildly successful. The quality of the experience within this tool far exceeds anything that we have used in the past. We are anticipating learning even more how to maximize the advantages of this tool. Should you have any questions about Zoom, please feel free to reach out to me or Janine Dubach. We are working on putting together a specialization in the assessment and treatment of addictions. This specialization will be applicable to both Departments within the SSBS. Anyone who has expertise or ideas on what topics/courses to include in the specialization, please reach out to me or Yulia Watters. We will be structuring the specialization to allow those who complete it to apply for licensure as a substance abuse professional, and so we anticipate that it will contain six courses. Changes to the PhD-MFT program are coming, and we anticipate those with excitement. The program changes will lead to a greater alignment with the Version 12 Standards from COAMFTE. There will also be some exciting additions to what specializations we offer, and greater clarity of focus for students. We appreciate Mark White's (PhD/DMFT Program Director) work to facilitate this change process. Thanks to Lisa Kelledy's (MAMFT Program Director) work, we are prepared to host a COAMFTE site visit in the fall. The visit will focus on the reaccreditation of the MAMFT program. We look forward to being able to share with the site visit team the unique and amazing features of this program.
