AUGUST GUEST LECTURE REVIEW On August 17, 2017, our NCU MFT Student Association was proud to host as our guest speaker Dr. Wendy Kovacs Cortes and her colleague Dr. Wells. Their topic Improving Clinical Encounters and Enriching Your Understanding of Families: Using Measurement Based Care in Your Practice described using Measurement Based Care (MBC) in treating families and youth. Their presentation focused on how therapists can assess their clients and families throughout every session in their clinical practice to determine: 1) the presenting problem/issues, 2) establish a treatment plan and make adjustments to that plan, and 3) to determine if the interventions used are effective. We were thrilled to have such eloquent speakers join us in helping to expand our knowledge on evidence-based therapy. The MBC approach is quite consistent with what we clinicians typically do in therapy, yet it adds the useful component of standardized measures which we all know insurance and managed care providers are looking for. Dr. Kovacs Cortes and Dr. Wells provided us with two publicly available and free standardized measures that can be used with youths of many ages. One of the most helpful parts of their presentation was their use of a case vignette. I found this to be extremely valuable in acquainting me better with the model.
