14 | About NCU | NCU Faculty Handbook The GS administers a Dissertation Completion Pathway (DCP) for students who have achieved doctoral candidacy at a prior institution, but who were unsuccessful in completing their dissertation. These potential candidates can complete an online application and interview process to be accepted into the DCP. All doctorates offered at NCU (excluding the PhD in MFT and the DMFT) can be completed through the DCP. Our Faculty Teaching and student learning is at the heart of the University's Mission. Our faculty upholds this Mission by teaching in our one-to-one learning model. Faculty share their passion for and knowledge of their areas of expertise, engage students as individuals, and provide individualized teaching that transforms students' skills, knowledge, and attitudes. NCU hires doctoral faculty who are accomplished scholars, have a wealth of professional experience to share with students, and exhibit a strong record of student mentorship. Overview and Definition of our Faculty The University faculty consist of full-time and part-time members. Regardless of their designation, all faculty members are held to the same expectations in each of their assigned academic endeavors. A small number of the full-time faculty members perform vital oversight in academic support units (e.g. Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and Learning Resources). Essential Characteristics of University Faculty Faculty are expected to possess and demonstrate the following characteristics: • Solid current discipline knowledge (e.g., in Psychology) and expertise in one or more content areas (e.g., identity formation). • Excellent communication skills: ability to write and speak clearly and concisely, to listen accurately and verify understandings, and to read closely and follow scholarly arguments. • Respect for the diverse nature of our community and appreciation for the value of an inclusive environment. • Respect for the value of online teaching and learning, and authentic belief and confidence in the University's approach to online instruction. • The ability to engage students (wherever they are) in the learning journey. • The ability to provide effective instruction and feedback that results in program learning outcome mastery and socialization into values and beliefs of a profession. • Respect for others, flexibility, affability, passion for teaching, enthusiasm, approachability, and responsiveness. • Commitment to continuous improvement in curricular, instructional, and professional development and to the development of Northcentral's learning community.
