42 | Faculty Development | NCU Faculty Handbook SECTION 5: FACULTY DEVELOPMENT Training All faculty are required to participate in a rigorous onboarding process, ongoing training, and professional development. All are offered by CTL via training courses, webinars, mini-courses, and breakout sessions (at faculty symposium). All participation is monitored, tracked, and shared with schools and departments. When joining NCU, faculty are required to complete an initial, onboarding process that consists of four courses. These courses focus on the technology systems and teaching philosophy, policies, and best practices employed at the University. The onboarding course sequence is as follows: • CTL 5000 Welcome to NCU - 2-3-hour course that takes NCU faculty on a tour of NCU and NCU resources. • CTL 5001 Teaching at NCU - 2-3-hour course that teaches faculty how to use Northcentral's Learning Systems and provides an overview of key teaching policies. • CTL 5002 Engaging Your Students - 2-3-hour course that focuses on NCU's model of Teaching through Engagement. • CTL 5003 Doctoral Student Experience - 2-3-hour course that provides an overview of the Doctoral Student Experience (DSE). Additionally, the CTL offers optional training opportunities for faculty wanting deeper understanding. Training courses are developed and offered based on need as determined by school leadership. CTL also offers ongoing webinars on topics of interest to faculty. Faculty input on webinar topics is solicited, and these suggestions are used to determine the topics for future webinars and for developing further faculty development courses. Webinars are recorded and made available to faculty for either first time or repeated viewing. Coaching The CTL provides training to ensure faculty are adept in their teaching using the NCU pedagogical approach and Associate Directors of Faculty Support and Development continue to coach and support faculty on an ongoing basis. Associate Directors of Faculty Support and Development (or, in some cases, Assistant Deans) within each School conduct one-to-one coaching sessions with individual faculty members to support teaching effectiveness. Coaching occurs on both a regular basis and on an as-needed basis. Faculty can select areas of concern to focus on in coaching, or coaching sessions can be based on issues raised in annual reviews and other evaluations of the faculty member's work. External Professional Development Faculty are expected to maintain their professional competencies by participating in professional and academic activities in their disciplinary field. Examples of such participation include attending conferences, seminars, workshops, or obtaining additional degrees and credentials. Schools and programs have specific requirements for professional development activities that apply to full-time and part-time faculty. Below are the professional development requirements for each School. Any questions regarding external professional development requirements should be directed to each School's Assistant Dean of Faculty or Department Chair.
