16 | About NCU | NCU Faculty Handbook At graduation, NCU recognizes exemplary student achievement through several awards: A Dissertation of the Year (DOY), a Poster of the Year (POY), and Alumni of the Year (AOY) (for those alumni that have used their NCU degree to contribute to the greater good). During their program of study, NCU also provides the opportunity for all the Honor Societies to recognize the accomplishments of their membership. For additional information, please refer to the graduation policies outlined in Catalog. NCUOne NCU uses a customized installation of Desire2Learn's Brightspace online learning management system internally named "NCUOne" to provide all program coursework and services. In NCUOne students and faculty have access to their courses, which are delivered asynchronously. Faculty also use synchronous tools (i.e. telephone, text, Skype, GoToMeeting and others) to engage with students on a regular basis in support of the authentic curriculum. Additionally, student support resources are provided by the University through NCUOne. In NCUOne, students can: • Access syllabi and learning materials for current courses. • Post completed assignments and interact with faculty. • View grade postings and faculty reviews of coursework, including written, audio, and video feedback. • Access their Outlook 365 email to communicate with faculty, Academic and Finance Advisors, and other University team members. • View degree plan, schedule, and grades. • Pay tuition and view financial information. • Access academic and technology resources and support services including the Library, Commons, ASC, and the CTL. Academic Freedom at Northcentral University Intellectual pluralism and academic freedom are central principles of American higher education. The Board of Trustees of Northcentral University endorses the concept of academic freedom contained in the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) "1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure with 1970 Interpretive Comments." The Board of Trustees of Northcentral University also supports the American Council on Education's "Statement on Academic Rights and Responsibilities," which includes the following over-arching principles: American higher education is characterized by a great diversity of institutions, each with its own mission and purpose. This diversity is a central feature and strength of our colleges and universities and must be valued and protected. The particular purpose of each school, as defined by the institution itself, should set the tone for the academic activities undertaken on campus. Colleges and universities should welcome intellectual pluralism and the free exchange of ideas. This kind of commitment will inevitably encourage debate over complex and difficult issues about which individuals will disagree. As such, discussions should be held in an environment characterized by openness, tolerance, and civility.
