NCU Faculty Handbook | Faculty Teaching Responsibilities | 21 Essential Teaching Duties All NCU faculty (including dissertation/doctoral project chairs and committee members) are teaching faculty. Deans communicate a faculty member's maximum student loads in addition to other responsibilities that are described in the faculty letter of appointment. The Dean has the authority to reduce teaching loads (within budget restraints) for activities that extend beyond the requirements stated in the appointment letter. Expected Performance - Teaching Specific performance standards for teaching include, but are not limited to: • Email and post a welcome letter to assigned students one week prior to the start of course, when feasible, but always within the first week of the course. • Record and post a video introduction in each course. • Answer all student emails within two calendar days. • Communicate with students within NCUOne, University-designated systems, and through University assigned email accounts. • Re-engage a student that is not actively participating in the course by • Emailing the student, • Telephoning or Skyping the student, and • Contacting Student and Financial Services by submitting an At-Risk notification in NCUOne. • Return student work in a timely manner as outlined in the Assignment Response Time guidelines. • Host no less than two, one-hour synchronous office hour sessions per week. • Post office hours in each course. • Provide quality feedback to students as defined in the Teaching Through Engagement guide. • Complete all required training. • Adhere to the University's policies and procedures as outlined in this handbook and other authoritative resources. Course Syllabi The course syllabi include the course metadata (e.g., course number and title, Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs), course concepts, number of weeks, grading format, etc.), performance requirements, and calculation of course grade (e.g., grading criteria, scale and assignment weights). The syllabi are considered proprietary and are not to be distributed except to faculty or to students enrolled in the course. Faculty should understand the CLOs for the course(s) they teach as well as the Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) for which their course is embedded. Having an understanding of course and PLOs will allow faculty to provide more effective feedback and guidance to students. The PLOs are listed with each program in the Catalog, which can be found on the NCU website. The School Deans, working with their Assessment and Curriculum Directors, Instructional Design and Development Department, and faculty, are responsible for ensuring that CLOs map to the PLOs. To maintain continuity among courses and to facilitate assessment of learning, all faculty are required to follow the syllabus provided for the course. Course syllabi provide students with necessary information to allow them to meet performance expectations.
