The first time you go to the www.FAFSA.Gov website you'll need to create an account.
Remember to write down your log-in information for safe keeping – you'll need it again!
Have a list of every school you're considering attending, even if you've not been accepted, and
include them in the application. This is important because your eligibility will be sent to each
school on the list and failing to include a school can delay the process.
Use your legal name as it appears on your Social Security card. Using any other version of
your name can delay or halt processing.
Apply as early as possible in order to allow time for processing your form before the date you
wish to start school.
Gather your tax information (or your parent's tax information if you're a dependent) before
starting. While you can fill it out without this information, including it can speed up the process.
What Comes Next?
After you fill out your FAFSA you will have to wait for it to be processed. The first thing you'll
receive after you've submitted it will be the Student Aid Report (SAR). This doesn't tell you how
much financial aid you'll receive, but it will be used to calculate how much aid you may be
eligible for.
Be sure to carefully check over your SAR to make sure the information is correct. If you need to
correct your application, simply log back into your FAFSA account at www.FAFSA.Gov. You can
also log in to check the status of your application as well.
