Recently I lost my father-in-law. He was the last of the men to pass in my and my spouse's families. A common theme in their eulogies was 'he was a good provider.' But in talking to families after the services, I could sense a strong loss in that the families wanted more than a provider. They wanted a husband, father, etc. This gave me great pause to think about my life and how I will be remembered, or what is thought of me today. Is it as a provider? A good listener? A super awesome grandpa? A pain in the neck? As we chase these degrees and careers and justify the crazy schedules as for the betterment of our families, or so we say, we truly must -- and this is cliché – stop and smell the roses. Set aside that Week 5 paper for an hour and read Dr Seuss's 'The Foot Book' to our three year old granddaughter. Set aside that draft of Chapter 3 and take our spouse out to see a blues band. Stop that endless scrutiny of our degree plan to have coffee with an aging parent. Take a week break between classes somewhere along the way and do a few chores to make life easier for our families, or for us. The work will be there when we get back. And we will be fresher and more focused for the experience. We have more time available to us than we realize and an hour or even a week to regroup now and then won't affect anything in the grand scheme of our lives and careers. But it may make the difference between our families thinking of or remembering us as students and workers, or as loving parents and spouses.
