5 Bettye Griffin, PhD Adjunct Faculty, Department of Psychology The Importance of Announcements in the Class Announcements are a dynamic tool that I use to communicate important course-wide information to my students. When I make broad, informative, and motivating announcements, the information helps my students stay on track each week. It is important to note, the information included should be relevant to all students, regardless of their grades, assignment completion, or other performance indicators. My Welcome Announcement is my opportunity to establish my presence in the classroom. As the first place of personalization, the announcement area sets the tone for the rest of the classroom experience for learners and me. As the homepage of the course, the announcements should create a welcoming classroom environment. It is important to be sure the tone is welcoming and encouraging in all announcements. I find students are much more likely to stay invested in the classroom if my tone conveys my passion and support. By having an announcement posted before the students begin the course, students quickly see my presence and know that the announcements are an important place to review upon entering the classroom. I am not only helping them get started in the course but also helping them learn important habits to their long-term academic and professional success. I find that announcements demonstrate my passion for the topics and entice students to take part in the course activities. I often provide detailed assignment examples and additional resources for the weekly assignments in the announcement area. I provide additional resources that can help students complete assignments and meet course objectives. Such additional resources are assignment-related websites or journals students can consult for further assistance and resources in the Writing Support Center, or other resources for APA Formatting.
