12 The Psychology Bulletin The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is part of your dissertation process, and our role is to ensure that human participants and their data are protected in the research study you will conduct for your dissertation. Once you have an approved dissertation proposal (DP), you will submit an application to the IRB. Even if you are not working with human participants, you will still submit an IRB application so we can make this determination. You should receive IRB approval before recruiting participants or beginning data collection. We understand that the IRB process can be overwhelming, and we are here to help you along the way. Here are some ways you can learn more about the IRB and engage with IRB staff. Visit Our Website Visit the IRB website early and often! We have resources to help you, and the most up-to-date templates will always be on our website. You can visit our IRB Process page if you're not sure where to start.
