7 Natalie Hamrick, PhD Part-Time Facult y, Department of Psychology I have been with NCU for a little over a year, teaching Health Psychology and research-related graduate courses. Perhaps it is the high analytical part of my personality, but I am all about introducing efficiency, both for me and for my students. Here are some tips: 1. In the initial call to get to a student, I recommend using two free Word add- ons to help them master writing and APA format: Grammarly and RefWorks. Many don't know that Grammarly not only catches errors, but makes suggestions on how to improve. Further, some may know that RefWorks will automatically insert the correct in-text citation and bibliography, but they don't have the time to try to figure out how to use it. I email the link to get started with Grammarly (https://ncu.libguides.com/editing) and also email them a RefWorks guide that I made to help them set up and use their account. 2. I make or locate supplemental resources to help clarify material or how to do an assignment. Depending upon the course or the type of information, I then either post these in the course as an announcement or email them to students. 3. I am mindful that my focus should be helping students master the material, and I resist the urge to correct all writing errors. Spending the time to correct all writing errors can take a monumental amount of time for students whose strength is not writing! Instead, I mark one paragraph so that the student has an example, then comment that there are similar errors throughout the rest of the paper. Definitely refer students to the ASC for writing assistance. They have excellent resources and coaching! 4. I keep a document with common feedback to then copy, paste, and edit as needed. This is an excellent time -saver that ensures I do not have to draft the same concepts repeatedly. 5. I also take quick – or sometimes long – breaks when I notice that I am losing my compassion for students who are not doing well on assignments. This helps me to be able to keep our mission to provide an accessible educational opportunity for all students in mind. I hope these tips are useful and inspire you!
