Create a Supportive Environment:
Sometimes there are strong fears, anxieties, or worries getting in the way of
a student's learning and growth. Thus, something happening internally and
personally can impede a student's academic and professional growth. While we
should not play the role of therapist with students, we can offer some support and
guidance and help dissipate some of the fears a student might be facing. This is
sometimes easily done with an encouraging note or email but sometimes a larger
conversation by phone or Zoom can be what a student needs. Creating a space
that feels safe and supportive can also allow students to do the personal work
that should accompany the academic work. Of course, sometimes supports are
necessary beyond what a faculty member can or should ethically provide. In
these cases, making recommendations for other resources can also be useful.
