• I make every effort to meet with students during their first week of the course. I
find that the time spent in getting to know students creates connection, and this
connection serves as an open door for students to ask for assistance, reach out
for a phone call or meeting, and invites more fluid conversation between me
and my students throughout the course.
• During this meeting, I always assess their learning style. If they are auditory
learners, I encourage them to locate which resources have listening
capabilities. Most students are unaware that there are textbook chapters
and articles that have auditory capabilities.
• In this meeting, I give my suggestion that students structure their week to
complete their course readings Monday through Wednesday, noting that
this usually leaves about 2 readings per night. I then suggest that they
work on their assignments Thursday- Saturday, allowing time for asking
