Darren Adamson, PhD, LMFT Chair, Department of Marriage and Family Sciences Happy New Year my Friends! What a year in 2021! We accomplished so many things as programs, the Department and in our personal lives that are worthy of celebration. What were the accomplishments you find most compelling? As you reflect on 2021 and all that we as a human race have witnessed and experienced, what comes to mind and what comes to heart? We all, in our professional world have experienced the beginning of a change process with the merger of NCU and NU. That has been challenging and, in some ways quite exhilarating. Of course, a universal experience impacting all of us is the continuation of the pandemic. We see so much suffering caused by the pandemic. We also see so much heroism and selfless acts of service and kindness. We have also witnessed an increase in the United States of frustration, anger, violence, and incivility in our public interactions. Certainly, there are many other items that we could list as we remember events and experiences of 2021. Last year was challenging in so many ways for so many people…everyone! What can we learn from our experiences last year? How can those insights, lessons, epiphanies impact our living in 2022? I invite each of us to consider lessons learned and how those can apply to making our shared experiences going into this year more gentle and loving, more kind and empowering. We are helping professionals…what have we learned that will make us even more effective in that role? Department News It is exciting to note that one of our students received a scholarship from the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS). The NSLS is an organization that provides a life-changing leadership program that helps students achieve personal growth, career success, and empowers them to have a positive impact in their communities. There were five awardees from NCU, which is an impressive number all from the same university. Stephen Thornton, a student in the MAMFT-CA program, received a scholarship. 15 January 2021 December 2021 CHANGE Student Population 2303 2629 326 Faculty Body 112 128 22 UPDATES Department
