22 | Faculty Teaching Responsibilities | NCU Faculty Handbook Faculty Contribution of Supplementary Materials in Courses NCU recognizes that faculty are experts in their fields and often know resources that differ from those included in NCU's centralized, authentic assessment curriculum. The University's guidance on supplementary course material is intended to promote academic freedom and highlight faculty expertise while maintaining the integrity and consistency of courses (and their assessment) across faculty and student experiences. Course Access Faculty will be able to access the courses they are teaching in NCUOne when students are enrolled and have accepted their enrollment into the course in NCUOne. Students can accept their course beginning on the course start date. Once the student has accepted, the student and faculty will be enrolled into a section in the course offering. Faculty will be able to provide students with a welcome to the course by posting a news item with the Welcome Letter attached. Directions and best practices for writing Welcome Letters and posting News items can be found in the NCUOne training materials in the Commons > Center for Teaching and Learning > Faculty Resource Area. Faculty will be notified of future student enrollments via the Course Registration Information (CRI) email that is sent to faculty and students within 21 days of the course start date. Course Start Dates Northcentral University is categorized as a non-term University. Courses are offered on a rolling basis, beginning on Monday of each week, 52 weeks a year. Faculty Course Teaching Assignments Deans or their designees approve faculty to teach particular courses soon after hire. Faculty members are copied when students receive their Course Registration Information (CRI), and thus know how many students will begin their course in the upcoming weeks. The CRI provides the student the name of the assigned faculty and students may contact the faculty in advance of the course's start date. However, coursework may not be submitted prior to the course's start date. After a School determines faculty course assignments, the School emails the course name, number, and syllabus to the faculty for their acceptance to teach the course(s). If part-time faculty do not wish to teach the course, they should respond to the email declining the assignment. If they wish to accept the assignment, faculty should respond to the email indicating their acceptance and when they are ready to receive students. The School then emails Faculty Scheduling to load the course(s) to the faculty workload. Digital Course Materials All course materials are provided to faculty and students in digital format for easy access. Access to digital course textbooks is provided via the "Bookshelf" link in NCUOne. RedShelf is the third-party provider for the digital textbooks. Students have the option of purchasing a hardcopy of a course textbook from RedShelf if they prefer a physical copy and one is available. Other course materials are provided via links to NCU Library holdings, PDFs and other online sources. Faculty have access to the course textbooks via the Bookshelf link while teaching their courses. If faculty need access to the course textbook before a course begins, or if they are currently not teaching the course, they should contact their School Assistant Dean of Faculty or Department Chair.
