SCHOLARSHIP AND GRANT APPLICATION TIPS Scholarships and grants can make higher education more financially accessible, but going through the application process isn't always easy. Here are a few tips to help make the process smoother and less stressful. • Before applying to a scholarship or grant, carefully read through the application materials to ensure that you understand all requirements. From word counts to deadlines, you need to follow every guideline exactly. • Many scholarships require essays, which is your opportunity to showcase your writing and your passion. Make sure that you write an original essay for each scholarship opportunity. • Treat your scholarship essay like an important class project. Once you get your final draft, have a trusted friend proofread it carefully to make sure you're turning in a well-written, error-free paper. • When considering merit-based scholarships, be realistic about your qualifications. This allows you to focus your efforts on scholarships you're more likely to qualify for or receive. • Apply for multiple scholarships and grants in order to improve your odds. Keep in mind that large rewards are likely to have more applicants, meaning more competition. You can improve your chances by not shying away from opportunities with modest rewards.
