Connect. Support. Grow.
reservations about on-line learning at first,
but have become a believer since working
with NCU. I'm really amazed at how the faculty
seems to really "get" the students, as I know
them. I'm sitting in the same room with them
and NCU faculty give the students feedback
exactly as I would! For all the right reasons.
What is a message or lesson you generally
share with students?
I guess the therapist I most admire is Irv Yalom,
and always used his Group Therapy textbook.
I also required that students read "The Gift of
Therapy" by him, as well as "The Body Keeps
the Score" by Bessel Van Der Kolk. I believe that
educational programs in our field must include,
no, emphasize, work on trauma, as we all have
a population dealing with endless wars, child
abuse of all kinds, etc. I was gratified to see this
book on the NYTimes bestseller list this week.
We all have trauma of some kind in our lives.
Birth, itself, is trauma, and the body does keep
the score with that ol' amygdala.
Where do you see the future of MFT heading?
I guess I agree with Yalom, who is just a bit older
than me. He was asked how he would summarize
his thoughts about therapy now that he had "seen
it all" and he said that more or less, it all boils
down to Carl Rogers and Unconditional Positive
Regard, along with careful, informed LISTENING.
NCU does that well.
