On how networking includes everyday interactions Dr. Abigail Scheg Networking doesn't always have to be extensive, expensive, or time consuming. Consider the community around you and the talent of those you already surround yourself with—what skills can you tap into or share with your local coffee shop owner, fellow participants at your place of worship, or local groups like a Chamber of Commerce. These small, community based steps can lead to grand pathways, too! On how networking is giving as well as receiving: Partnering to help slaves in India Dr. John Frame When we think of networking, we often think of it in terms of shaking hands with people who may, somehow, advance our own personal interests. But networking is much more—even different—than that. For example, I've learned that we should think of networking in terms of finding ways to help the people we meet. We should ask ourselves: How can I help others (rather than wanting them first to help me)? My current research resonates with an important phrase in the revised mission of the NCU School of Business: "…standing alongside them to achieve their fullest potential…" As highlighted elsewhere in this edition of Changing Times, my research relates to faith-based nonprofits and faith communities working on anti-trafficking and modern slavery issues. An inspiring example I came across in my research relates to a secular nonprofit organization partnering with Catholic nuns who are helping families enslaved in brick kilns in India. This secular organization "stands alongside" (to use the words in our mission) the sisters, funding them and empowering them to do their work. These sisters basically wore down the brick kiln owners, asking them over and over if they could enter to help the families enslaved inside. Because the sisters were deemed harmless, the owners agreed, and they allow them to educate the children and support the parents. Critical to the success of the sisters is the secular organization "…standing alongside them to achieve their fullest potential…," as well as the persistence of the sisters to help others. 9 Ref lections ON NETWORKING:
